In their native habitats, most epiphytic (tree dwelling) orchid generae are subject to constant fresh water drenching (rain) and subsequent drying (constant air flow), so the "in captivity" pot substrate must mimic this "wet/dry" sequence, for growing success. Epiphytic growing media commonly includes a varying mixture of fir bark chunks, charcoal chunks, lava rock chunks, clay pellets, rubber chunks, tree fern fibers and perlite chunks. Generae potted in bark medium should be repotted every 18 to 24 months, if the media has started to break down.
These genera are:>>> Cattleya, Epidendrum, Dendrobium, Oncidium, Odontoglossum, and their hybrids.
The terrestrial (humus ground) orchids inhabitat the leaf humus layer around trees, or humus accomulations in forks of trees, so they have a slightly constant damp environment. Terrestial media need moisture retention capabilities such as: coconut husk chunks, sphagnum moss, and peat moss chunks, as well as perlite, charcoal, rubber pieces, and some fir bark for drainage. Terrestial generae should be repotted every 12 to 18 months, as media often breaks down sooner than the drier medias. ,
>> Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilims, and their hybrids.
,
Epiphytic orchids, grown in slat baskets , particularly Vanda Alliance Orchids, rarely need rebasketing, until basket breaks down.
