This species is widespread throughout Burma, Thailand, into Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It is a member of the Formosum Section ( formerly called Nigrohirsutae Section) of the genus. The Dendrobium draconis maintains the characteristic dark stem and leaf hairs into maturity. An easy to grow species in loose media, such as coconut chips, which maintain good humidity levels while allowing excellent air movement through the medium. Originally collected by Rev. C. Parish and first flowered in England in 1862. One of the Parish specimens was used by H. G. Reichenbach to describe the species. His description appeared in Botanische Zeitung in 1862 also
